Jim Joyce Misses Call…Alters History

by Matt on June 3, 2010

Veteran MLB Umpire Jim Joyce missed a bang-bang call at first base in Wednesdays Cleveland and Detroit game in Detroit.  Armando Gallaraga, only making his second start of the season, pitched only 88 pitches in the complete game one-hit shutout of the Indians.  The call will be disputed most likely for the rest of this season and into next season.  Jim Joyce was rated on numerous occasions one of the best current MLB Umpires by a Sports Illustrated player poll.  The play, after slowed down on instant replay, revealed that Gallaraga clearly touched first base with the ball in hand.  Gallaraga was looking to be added to the history books with Dallas Braden and Roy Halladay throwing perfect games this year.
